Norma was a founder member of the choir, taking over as conductor in 1986. She worked tirelessly for the choir until she finally decided to retire in 2010, having successfully steered us through the intervening years.
Those of us who were members of the choir during her ‘reign’ remember many happy times together, both musically and socially (including a lot of globetrotting) when Norma’s boundless energy and friendliness made us many new friends. Our last ‘trip’ was to the Lofoten Isles in 2005 where we did a joint concert with The Havdur Choir. They paid us a return visit 2006. Norma and members of the choirs had a wonderful time and made many friends, some of whom still stay in regular contact. Many of our loyal supporters know her as the person standing in front of the choir keeping us in check and encouraging our efforts.
Sadly Norma died on 4th May 2016 having battled with cancer during her last year. She was born on the 20th April 1933. She requested that we sing My Spirit Sang all Day at her funeral. The piece was a favorite of hers and summed up her life – her spirit sang all day and that spirit will live in our memories for ever.
Norma is sadly missed by many as she was a important person in the musical life of both Tynemouth and beyond, she worked as a school music teacher for many years and many of her pupils remember enthusiasm and love of music she instilled into them..
